Shirlington neighbor Jennie Dean Park to be expanded - will result in more green space
Arlington County Parks and Recreation webpage
Project: Jennie Dean Park, LaPorte Building Deconstruction
Location: 3600 South Four Mile Run Drive, Arlington, Virginia 22206
Funding: Land Acquisition Funds
Status: In Progress
Start Date: Winter 2012 - End Date: Spring 2013
Description: The County acquired the property at 3600 and 3610 South Four Mile Run Drive in 2002 as part of the long term strategy for the expansion of Jennie Dean Park. Since that time, the building and adjacent parking area have been used by the County as temporary offices and storage.
The Department of Parks and Recreation is removing the LaPorte Building and reestablishing that part of the site as open space. Instead of using traditional demolition means and methods, the County’s contractor will deconstruct the building, taking the building apart in order to reclaim, reuse and/or recycle as much of the materials as possible.
Once the building is removed, the area will be graded and seeded and temporary landscaping will be installed around the site perimeter and two benches will be installed at the corner of South Four Mile Run Drive and South Nelson Street. The area will be used to temporarily store equipment and ART buses while their new facilities are being constructed elsewhere in the County. Following this temporary use, the area will be converted to open space.
